Timothy George
Timothy George
Dr. Timothy George is a distinguished American theologian, educator, and author. He is the founding dean of Beeson Divinity School, serving from 1989 until 2019, and currently holds the title of Research Professor of Divinity. Over his three decades of leadership, George shaped the school’s mission to train men and women for faithful ministry. He is a prolific writer, having authored more than 20 books and contributed extensively to scholarly journals. His works include Theology of the Reformers, a widely used textbook translated into multiple languages, and Is the Father of Jesus the God of Muhammad?, reflecting his deep engagement with interfaith dialogue.
George has also served on the editorial boards of leading journals such as Christianity Today, First Things, and Books & Culture. He is a fellow at The Center for Baptist Renewal and co-chair of Evangelicals and Catholics Together. His commitment to theological scholarship is reflected in his role as general editor of the 28-volume Reformation Commentary on Scripture.
Beyond his academic achievements, George is an ordained Southern Baptist minister and has pastored churches in Georgia, Alabama, and Massachusetts. His contributions to Baptist history, Reformation theology, and ecumenism have left a lasting impact on the field. He holds degrees from Harvard Divinity School and Harvard University, where he earned his ThD. George and his wife, Denise, have two adult children.
