Professor Stuart is a distinguished scholar with a profound expertise in Biblical Interpretation, Old Testament Studies, and Exegetical Method. He holds a PhD from Harvard University, where he completed his thesis on Old Testament and early Semitic poetry. His academic journey also includes graduate studies at Yale Divinity School and a Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude from Harvard College. Since joining Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in 1971, Professor Stuart has been a key faculty member, specializing in Old Testament studies and ancient Near Eastern languages and cultures, including Assyrian and Babylonian literature.
Fluent in 14 ancient and modern languages, Professor Stuart’s courses at Gordon-Conwell focus on biblical exegesis, ancient oriental languages, and Old Testament interpretation. His published works, including Old Testament Exegesis: A Primer for Students and Pastors and How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth, have been translated into over 30 languages. His extensive academic contributions have been featured in major journals, anthologies, and magazines.
Beyond academia, Professor Stuart has held various leadership roles, including co-chair of the Old Testament Colloquium for the Boston Theological Institute and trustee emeritus of the Massachusetts Bible Society. He has also pastored multiple churches in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and remains active in ministry, particularly through short-term missions and outreach to Gypsy communities in Eastern Europe.
As a sought-after speaker and media guest, Professor Stuart has appeared on shows such as Mysteries of the Bible and Christianity: The First Thousand Years. He and his wife, Gayle, reside in Bradford, Massachusetts, where they raised eight children and manage two tree farms in New Hampshire.
