Western Sea

WESTERN SEA. This term appears in the RSV in Joel 2:20 and Zechariah 14:8, in place of KJV’s “utmost” or “hinder” sea, as a description of the Mediterranean. The contrast is with the “eastern” or Dead Sea, the two between them limiting the Israelite view to E and W. See also Sea; Great Sea.
