Vicar Apostolic

Formerly one to whom the pope delegated responsibility in some distant outpost of his jurisdiction, the vicar apostolic is now more usually a titular bishop appointed to a territory either without bishops of its own, or where the latter are for some reason unable to carry out their episcopal functions.
