Theophilus Des Brisay
1755-1825. First Anglican clergyman on St. John's (Prince Edward) Island, he went there in 1775, and although the only Protestant clergyman there, he received no stipend and so became the chaplain for an army regiment stationed there. After he provided intermittent services for some time, the government set apart £150 for his support, and so he began to provide regular services, although he visited his parish of Charlottetown only on Sundays. A tolerant churchman, he even welcomed the Methodist evangelist William Black during the latter's preaching tour of 1783.
