Theodore of Raithu

SIXTH century. Monk and presbyter of a monastery in Raïthu, located on the SW coast of the Sinai peninsula. Some scholars claim that he is identical with Theodore of Pharan. The one work that can be attributed to him with certainty, Proparaskuem (Praeparatio) was written between 537 and 553. It defended Chalcedonian Christology (see Chalcedon) and the theology of Cyril* of Alexandria, and attacked two Monophysites, Julian of Halicarnassus and Severus* of Antioch. It also tried to counter the views of Manes, Nestorius (see Nestorianism), Eutyches*, Apollinarius, Paul of Samosata*, and Theodore of Mopsuestia.*
