A work first published anonymously in London in 1658 and which has been attributed to various authors, although Archbishop Sterne of York seems one of the most likely candidates. Written from a Church of England and royalist point of view, it yet has much in common with the practical writings of Richard Baxter,* the contemporary Presbyterian divine. Seeking to deal with the ethical aspects of the Christian life, it was very popular in its own day and has been reprinted in numerous editions down to the present time.
