The Dark Ages

Originally an alternative description of the [[Middle Ages]],* the term was later restricted to the six centuries ending about 1100. The “Dark” has been taken to signify depreciation of morality, scholarship, and achievements, but modern research has increasingly tended to interpret the adjective as denoting rather the paucity of our knowledge of the period.
