Telesphorus
d. c.137. Martyr; bishop of Rome from about 127. According to the Liber Pontificalis he was a Greek. He apparently always observed Easter on Sundays, as against Quartodeciman* practice. Irenaeus* mentions him as the first Roman bishop to be martyred. His, in fact, is the only name known to us as a martyr of the emperor Hadrian's* reign.
