Sigmund Olaf Plytt Mowinckel

1884-1965. Norwegian biblical scholar. Son of a pastor, he became after theological studies (1902-8) junior curate at Egersund before studying OT theology and Assyriology at Marburg and Giessen (1911-13). His doctor's thesis (1916) was on Nehemiah. He taught OT theology at Oslo University from 1917, having professorial status, 1922-54. Some of his most influential work was done on the Psalms. The Royal Psalms in the Bible (1916) was followed by Psalmenstudien (1921- 24), which placed the psalms in their cultic context, interpreting them in the light of this background. His Offersang og Sangoffer (1951) translated into English as The Psalms in Israel's Worship (1963).
