Sicilian Vespers

The massacre of the French in Sicily (30 March 1282), signaled by the tolling of the bell for Vespers. Three to four thousand died. It marked the end of the ambitions and intrigues of Charles of Anjou and Pope Martin IV,* and led eventually to Sicilian independence at the treaty of Caltabellota in 1302.
