Shammai
SHAMMAI (shăm'ā-ī, Heb. shammay, contraction of shema‘yâ, Jehovah has heard). The name of three descendants of Judah:
1. A son of Onam, who was the son of Jerahmeel by Atarah; father of Nadab and Abishur (1Chr.2.28, 1Chr.2.32).
2. A son of Rekem and father of Maon (1Chr.2.44-1Chr.2.45); a descendant of “Caleb the brother of Jerahmeel” (1Chr.2.42).
3. A descendant of Ezrah (1Chr.4.17-1Chr.4.18). The text here is very ambiguous and uncertain; probably, by a transposition, Shammai was the son of Mered by Bithiah, Pharaoh’s daughter (1Chr.4.18).
SHAMMAI shăm’ ī (שַׁמַּ֣י). 1. A Jerahmeelite from Judah (1 Chron 2:28, 32). He was the son of Onam, the father of Nadab and Abishur, and the brother of Jada.
2. A descendant of Caleb of Judah (1 Chron 2:44, 45); the “son” of Rekem and “father” of Maon.
3. A descendant of Judah; the son of Mered by his wife Bithiah (1 Chron 4:17).
