SCYTHOPOLIS sĭth ŏp’ ə lĭs (Σκυθόπολις; cf. Σκυθω̂ν πόλις, city of the Scythians [2 Macc 12:29] and Σκυθοπολι̂ται [12:30]). The Gr. name for Bethshan (q.v.; present Beisān). At the time of Christ it was one of the cities of the Decapolis (q.v.). The name may recall the Scythian invasions of the late 7th cent. b.c.
