(Lat. regula, “rule”). General term for members of the clergy who are bound by the vows of religion and live in community, following a “rule,” in distinction from the “secular” clergy, i.e., priests living in the world. Monastic “rules” go back as far as Pachomius* (c.305); one of the most influential was that of Benedict of Nursia* (529).
