potheinos) (c.87-177. Martyr and first bishop of Lyons (Lugdunum). Born probably in Asia Minor and a disciple of Polycarp,* he is said to have introduced Christianity into S Gaul. In the persecution that broke out in Lyons in 177, described in the Epistles of the Churches in Vienne and Lyons, the ninety-year-old bishop was questioned by the governor and so badly treated that he died within two days.
