Postulant

One who lives in a religious house under the supervision of the religious superior in a probationary period before entering formally into the novitiate. The postulant can leave at any time, but postulancy is not required for either valid entrance into the novitiate or for valid profession of vows subsequently. Postulancy ends when the candidate is admitted to the novitiate.
