Polycrates
FL. c.190. Bishop of Ephesus. He was excommunicated for his leadership of Asia Minor Quartodecimanian* churchmen against Pope Victor's* (188-99) encyclical placing Easter uniformly on Sunday. Victor's strong stand against Quartodeciman tradition, which allowed a variable feast day after Jewish custom, was disapproved by Irenaeus and generally. Passover was not celebrated at all in Rome until Soter, Victor's predecessor, first celebrated Easter on Sunday. Nothing more is known about Polycrates.
