d.154. Bishop of Rome from about 140. Information about his life and pontificate is at best sketchy. The Muratorian Fragment lists his brother as the author of the Shepherd of Hermas,* while the Liber Pontificalis indicates that he was born in Aquileia. The tradition that he was a martyr does not extend to the early period of the church.
