Pierre Sabatier
1683-1742. French biblical scholar. Born in Poitiers, he studied in the monastery of St.-Germain-des- Prés, the great center of Maurist* learning, under Thierry Ruinart.* After the latter's death he made his life's work the search for the pre-Vulgate Latin text of the Bible. Though not completed at his death, his virtually exhaustive collection of manuscript material was published in 1743 at Reims as Bibliorum Sacrorum Latinae Versiones Antiquae. This was the first work of its kind and is still of great value today. Known as a deeply pious man, he removed to Reims in the latter part of his life because of accusations that he was a Jansenist.*
