Niter

NITER (nī'têr, Heb. nether). Not the same as our present niter, but an impure mixture of washing and baking sodas found in deposits around the alkali lakes of Egypt. The references in Scripture are to its fizzing with vinegar and its use in cleansing (Prov.25.20; Jer.2.22; “soda” in niv, “nitre” in kjv).
