Mishma

MISHMA (mĭsh'ma, Heb. mishmā‘)

A son of Ishmael and a prince of the Ishmaelites (Gen.25.14; 1Chr.1.30).Progenitor of a large family of Simeonites through his descendant Shimei (1Chr.4.25ff.). They held their cities until David’s time.

MISHMA mĭsh’ mə (מִשְׁמַ֥ע, LXX Μας(α, G1) μα(ν, G3708), the word is used in Heb. as a thing heard (Isa 11:3); as a personal name it means an obedient person. A masculine personal name.

1. The fifth of the twelve sons of Ishmael, Abraham’s son through Hagar, Sarah’s Egyp. maid (Gen 25:14 and 1 Chron 1:30).

2. The sons of Simeon listed in 1 Chronicles 4:25 include some offspring not given in Genesis 46:10. It seems likely that Mibsam and Mishma are not in the Genesis account because they were born after Jacob and his family moved to Egypt.
