MEAL (Heb. qemah in Gen.18.6; sōleth in Lev.2.1; Gr. aleuron in Matt.13.33). The ground grain used for both food and sacrificial offerings. It typified Christ in his perfect humanity. It has a remote figurative use in such passages as Isa.47.2 and Hos.8.7. NIV generally reads “flour.”

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (1915)

Denotes the portion of food eaten at any one time. It is found as a compound in Ru 2:14, "meal-time," literally, "the time of eating."
