Lucre
LUCRE lōō’ kər (בֶּ֫צַע, H1299; κέρδος, G3046). The word means “gain,” “riches,” “money.” In the KJV NT it is always qualified by “filthy” (1 Tim 3:3, 8; Titus 1:7; 1 Pet 5:2). That is because when the KJV was made the word “lucre” did not mean unworthy or dishonest gain. Filthy lucre means sordid gain. The Bible gives no warrant to refer to money as “filthy lucre.”
