Licentiate

A term common in Scottish Presbyterianism to signify one who, having completed his theological studies, has received authority to preach the Word, but has not yet been by ordination given authority to administer the sacraments. Sometimes the word “probationer” is used to describe one having this status; in previous times in Scotland the word “preacher of the gospel” or “expectant” was used.
