Lebbaeus

LEBBAEUS lĕ be’ əs, Gr. Λεββαι̂ος, G3304, a variant reading found in some Gr. MSS viz. D, certain Old Lat. codices of the 4th and 5th cent. and the Lat. VSS of oriental origin and a mass of Syrian and Coptic Gr. texts. The name is found in Matthew 10:3; Mark 3:18 in place of the accepted Thaddaeus. The variant is of Jewish origin and may be representative of an ancient surname of the apostle Thaddaeus.
