Joseph Le Caron

1586-1632. Roman Catholic missionary to Canada. One of three members of the Récollet* Order, a reformed branch of the Franciscans, who responded in 1615 to an appeal by Samuel de Champlain* for missionaries to take the Gospel to the Indians in New France, he moved from Quebec further west to establish the first mission among the Hurons. He was for a year (1617-18) provincial minister of Quebec. In 1618 Caron went to Tadoussac to work among the Montagnais, whom he served intermittently for some years. He compiled dictionaries of the Huron, Algonquin, and Montagnais languages, but these have been lost.
