John of Beverley

d.721. Bishop of York. He was educated at the school of Canterbury and later studied at Hilda's double abbey at Whitby. He was one of the five pupils of hers there who later became bishops. John was appointed to the see of Hexham in 686. One of those whom he ordained while he was at Hexham was Bede.* In 705 he was translated to York. During his episcopate there he founded an abbey at Inderawood (the modern Beverley), to which he retired on resigning his see in 718. He had a considerable reputation for personal holiness and seems to have possessed gifts of spiritual healing. An extensive cultus grew up around him in medieval England.
