Herd
HERD. Israel, before Joshua’s time, like the Bedouins of today, were nomads. After the conquest of Canaan they continued to be a pastoral people for the most part. For the property of such a people, see Job.1.3 or Job.42.12. The herds consisted of the larger animals, as contrasted with the flocks of sheep, goats, etc. The cattle were used in plowing and threshing and for sacrifice but were not commonly fattened for food (though in contrast, see Ezek.39.18).
