1603-1676. French lawyer and classical scholar. Educated at the Jesuit college of Clermont and at Bourges, he renounced the bar in 1630 to devote himself to classical study. In 1650 he began to do research in early Greek church historians. Of special value was his Latin translation (1659-73) of Eusebius's Ecclesiastical History, which covers the period up to 324. Later Valois issued translations of the church histories of Socrates and Sozomen (1668), and Theodoret and Evagrius (1673).
