Hamstring
HAMSTRING (Hebrew ‘āqar, to hamstring an animal). The NIV of Gen.49.6 reads, “They...hamstrung oxen,” but KJV reads, “They digged down a wall.” God commanded Joshua to hamstring (kjv, asv “hough”) the horses of the Canaanites, and Joshua obeyed (Josh.11.6, Josh.11.9). David hamstrung the horses of Hadadezer, king of Zobah (2Sam.8.4; 1Chr.18.4). This was a cruel practice, justified only by extreme military necessity.
