Gate of the Foundation
FOUNDATION, GATE OF THE (שַׁ֣עַר הַיְסֹ֑וד). A gate of Jerusalem mentioned in 2 Chronicles 23:5 in the account of Athaliah’s execution (2 Chron 23:1-15); also called “the gate Sur” (2 Kings 11:6; LXX, “gate of the ways”). It is possibly the same as the horse gate (Heb. שַֽׁעַר־הַסּוּסִ֖ים) of 2 Chronicles 23:15; 2 Kings 11:16, leading to the king’s palace. This gate was prob. a connection between the palace and Temple.
