willem hessels VAN Est) (1542-1613. Dutch biblical exegete. Born in Gorcum he studied at Utrecht and Louvain, where he was deeply influenced by [[Michel Baius]].* Seminary professor at Douai from 1582 and chancellor of the university there from 1595 till his death, he was respected by colleagues and students alike for his learning, discernment, and saintliness. He played an important part in the predestinarian controversies which led to the Congregatio de auxiliis (1597-1607). Wide theological reading and fine judgment made his commentaries widely used.
