From a root (eminere) expressive of loftiness or prominence in a physical sense, an ecclesiastical title of honor was derived. It was limited by Urban VIII in 1630 to the grand master of the order of Malta, the three archiepiscopal electors of the Holy Roman Empire, and the cardinals in general-which latter usage alone has survived.
