Cyprian
c. 476-549. Bishop of Toulon. He was a disciple of Caesarius of Arles,* whose life he wrote in 530. As bishop he took part in the various councils of the bishops of Provence held by Caesarius: Arles in 524, Carpentras in 527, Orange and Vaison in 529, Marseille in 533. When after the Council of Orange the bishops of the neighboring province of Vienne met to criticize the decisions of the council concerning grace, Cyprian was sent to plead the cause of orthodoxy.
