Conservative Baptist Association of America

An association of about 1,150 Baptist churches chiefly in the N United States, organized at Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1947. It is closely allied with the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society, the Conservative Baptist Home Mission Society, and four educational institutions. These seven organizations constitute the Conservative Baptist “movement.” Churches within the association cooperate with other denominations through the National Association of Evangelicals. The association arose from the fundamentalist-modernist struggle in the Northern (now American) Baptist Convention. In 1943 several hundred conservative churches, impatient with the Northern Baptist Convention’s refusal to adopt doctrinal standards for its missionary program, formed the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society. The association of churches was organized when it became apparent that the Northern Convention would not tolerate a competing missionary agency within its organization.
