Claudius of Turin

d.827. Bishop of Turin. Of Spanish birth, he was trained in theology at the school of Leidradus at Lyons, and also under Felix,* bishop of Urgel, an Adoptianist. He was a priest in the court of Louis the Pious in Aquitaine and followed him to Aachen when Louis became emperor. Made bishop of Turin (817/8), Claudius attacked the cult of images in his Liber de imaginibus, wrongly attributed to Agobard* of Lyons, on which Dungal and Jonas of Orléans based their attacks on him. He wrote commentaries on some of the OT books and the gospels, and probably all the Pauline epistles, using the catenae form which obtained in the Carolingian and later medieval period.
