Catherine of Alexandria

Virgin and martyr. According to Simeon Megaphrastes in the tenth century, she defended the faith at Alexandria before philosophers and courtiers, and was tortured to death by “Maxentius” the emperor. A corpse disinterred by monks on Mt. Sinai in the eighth or ninth century, the legend continues, had been transported there by angels from Alexandria. In 1063 the Order of the Knights of Mt. Sinai was formed to protect her relics and observe the Rule of St. Basil. Their emblem was a broken spiked wheel. Historical detail forbids her identification with the anonymous Christian lady of Alexandria in Eusebius HE 8.15.
