C. I. Scofield

1843-1921. American biblical scholar. Born in Michigan and raised in Tennessee, Scofield won the Confederate Cross of Honor while serving with Lee's army. Turning to law, he was admitted to the Kansas bar in 1869. After two years as U.S. attorney, he practiced law in St. Louis. After his conversion he was ordained to serve a small Congregational church in Dallas (1882-95). At Moody's request he took over the Moody Church in East Northfield, Massachusetts (1895-1902). He returned to the Dallas church (1902-7) before taking up Bible conference work at home and in the British Isles, and founding the Central American Mission. The year 1909 saw the publication of his dispensational, premillennial Bible, which he edited with the financial assistance of prominent businessmen.
