Barbara Heck

1744-1804. “Mother of American Methodism.” Born in Ireland of a German Palatinate refugee family, she migrated to New York with her husband in 1760. She encouraged her cousin Philip Embury* to hold the first Methodist meeting in America in his home, and encouraged him further in the building of the first Methodist chapel in America. The family moved to Canada early in the Revolutionary War because of their Tory views.
