Antipope

A pope elected in opposition to one held to have been canonically chosen. Although on general reckoning there have been some twenty-five antipopes in the history of the Church, the term is especially applied to the Great Schism* in the Western Church (1378-1417), during which period there was always a pope and an antipope (latterly two antipopes).
