Allah
The unpluralizable, monotheistic Islamic proper name for God, like Hebrew Yahweh. It designates omnipotent creator, merciful, unbegotten, unbegetting, fiercely rejecting the incarnation of Christ. The name is used also by modern Arab Christians who say concerning future contingencies: “in sha' Allah” as other Christians might say “D.V.” The Koran* and traditions use ninety-nine names for God, yet a cardinal point of Islam proclaimed from every minaret is “la ilah illa' Allah”“there is no God but Allah.”
