All to Brake

ALL TO BRAKE. An obsolete expression found in the KJV of Judges 9:53, “And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull.” RSV has “crushed his skull,” which is a literal rendering of the Heb., and is what the KJV tr. meant by the expression. In the 17th cent. “all to” was regarded as an adverb meaning “completely” or “entirely.”
