Agnes
Roman Christian martyr. She was renowned for the heroic defense of her chastity, probably in the persecution by Maximian in the West (304-5). Constantina, daughter of the Emperor Constantine, built a basilica about 350 over her reputed grave near the Via Nomentana. She is depicted on several cups with eyes uplifted and arms raised to God in prayer. Fiction is mixed with fact in her Passio, falsely attributed to Ambrose of Milan.
