fourth century. A sect that adhered to the doctrine attributed to Macedonius of Constantinople: that the Holy Spirit is a created being, ranking with the angels. They were said by Philastrius, the antiheretical writer, to be unsocial at meals, hence their name which indicates that a Christian should eat in secret.
