Adelard of Bath

<span class="date">twelfth century</span>. English philosophical writer. Little is known of his career, but he evidently studied at French universities, traveled extensively in Europe, Africa, and the Near East, and wrote a book on Arabic science. One of the most versatile men of his age, he was distinguished in many fields, including philosophy, theology, natural sciences, and mathematics. Of his published works the best known are <em>De Eodem et Diverso </em> (<em>Identity and Difference</em>), and <em>Quaestiones naturales</em> in which he used Aristotle's argument from motion to establish the existence of God.<br /><br />
