Adam of Marsh

adam de Marisco) (d.1258. English Franciscan monk. Born in Somerset, he studied under Robert Grossteste at Oxford, was ordained and received the living of Wearmouth, County Durham, and about 1232 became a Franciscan monk at Worcester. He accompanied Grosseteste, now bishop of Lincoln, to the Council of Lyons (1244-46), and thereafter taught at Oxford for some three years. Known in his lifetime as “Doctor Illustris,” he had such learning and sagacity that his advice was sought by Henry III, Boniface of Savoy (archbishop of Canterbury), and the pope.
