Adalbert of Utrecht

fl. 700. Northumbrian-born missionary. Possibly the grandson of Oswald, king of Deira, he went to Ireland with Egbert, then joined Willibrord,* the famous Northumbrian missionary, and ten others on a mission to Friesland. After the conversion of the Frisians, he served as the first archdeacon of Utrecht. His name occurs among a list of preachers sent into western Germany and Kennemaria in 702 by order of the Council of Utrecht, with Egmont specially mentioned as the scene of his labors. The abbey of Egmont founded by the counts of Holland in his honor was completely destroyed by the Spaniards at the siege of Alkmaar in 1573.
