d.489. Patriarch from 471. He opposed the anti-Chalcedon encyclical of the usurping Emperor Basiliscus (475) and, on Zeno's restoration (476), collaborated in the deposition of Monophysite* bishops. In 479 he consecrated Calanaion, a Chalcedonian, as bishop of Antioch, and was criticized by Pope Simplicius for interfering in another see. At the instigation of the Monophysite Peter Mongus he encouraged Zeno to promulgate the Henoticon* in the interests of theological peace (482), for which Felix of Rome excommunicated him. Rejecting this with contempt, Acacius erased Felix's name from the “diptychs.” Thus arose the [[Acacian Schism]].*
