Siricius
c.334-399. Pope from 384. Roman-born, he was much influenced by Ambrose,* but had his own decided views about the exalted status of his office and responsibilities. This was made clear in a letter to Bishop Himerius of Tarragona, regarded as the first papal decretal. During his pontificate the Melitian Schism* was ended, Priscillianism opposed, extremism of various kinds disapproved of, and the new basilica of St. Paul dedicated.
