Macarius of Moscow
1810-1882. Metropolitan of Moscow. Educated at the seminary at Kursk, then at Kiev, he became a leading theologian in the Russian Orthodox Church, holding the professorship of dogmatic theology at the Academy of St. Petersburg. In 1857 he was made bishop of Tamlov, and in 1879 metropolitan of Moscow. In this position he became an authority on the official theology of the Roman Catholic Church. His best- known works are his Introduction à la Théologie dogmatique orthodoxe (1845), Théologie dogmatique orthodoxe (5 vols., 1845-53), and History of the Russian Church (12 vols., 1857-82).
